Broken dreams and hope, carried 2000 miles through scorching deserts and over lofty mountains. At last... the sight of the promise land. Those of you who visit this grave carry a torch of love and hope (which this young girl lost), and pass it on, to generations unborn. Rechall Melton was laid to rest here, on a cold and frosty morning, Oct. 4, 1850. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.<br />

It is said that in 1850 a young girl, Rachel Melton, native of Iowa, was accompanying her parents on a journey West via covered wagon train when she became violently ill. Camp was made and every effort was made to cure her, as she was the joy of the party, but she passed away and was buried on this spot.

Volcano - 4 Miles<br /><br />Started in 1848 by soldiers of Colonel Stevenson's regiment. Named by miners because of apparent volcanic appearance. here the first California rental library, 1850, was established, and one of the first "Little Theaters" founded by the "Volcano Thespian Society", 1854. Volcano - Right Here!<br /><br />1934 plaque placed in Pine Grove as "obituary" when planned dam would flood Volcano. Geology & water rights negated plan. So Volcano didn't drown. Volcano<br /><br />Discovered in 1848 by Colonel Stevenson's men who mined Soldiers' Gulch in '49. First covered wagon party sluiced rich gravel beds. By '53, men swarmed flats and gulches naming them picturesquely. Hydraulic operations, begun in '55, brought thousands of fortune seekers to form town of 17 hotels, library, theaters, and courts of quick justice. During Civil War, Volcano gold served the Union, "Volcano Blues" smuggled cannon "Old Abe" in by hearse to quell rebels. Mellow with memories, this birthplace of General Liversedge, whose marines raised our flag on Iwo Jima, honors its heroes with annual pageantry in Soldiers' Gulch.<br /><br />Amador County Historical Society, 1948.

In 1848, Mexican Settlers from Sonora, Mexico established a camp on the north back of the Mokelumne River and called it Sonora Bar. At the start of the California Gold Rush miners flocked to the Mokelumne River and set up camps and towns along its mineral-rich banks. Just across the river from Sonora Bar lay the exceedingly rich gravel deposits of Poverty Bar. A ferry was established that carried miners across the river to Poverty Bar and the hard-rock mines of Calaveras County. Eventually the name of the camp was changed from Sonora Bar to Lancha Plana, Spanish for "flat boat," a reference to the ferry.<br /><br />Lancha Plana reached the height of its prosperity after 1856 when hill and bluff mining largely replaced river mining. In 1858, the town boasted a population of over 1,000 people, enough to support it's own newspaper. The Lancha Plana Dispatch went into circulation on March 3, 1860. By November of that year, the successful newspaper was relocated to Jackson, the Amador County seat, and became the Amador County Dispatch.<br /><br />Today, what is left of Lancha Plana lays beneath the waters of the East Bay Municipal Utility District's Camanche Reservoir. The modern Lancha Plana Bridge is located near the now inundated town after which it is named. <br /><br />Thank you to the East Bay Municipal Utility District for allowing the placement of this commemorative plaque on their property.<br /><br />Dedicated January 21, 2017 (6022) by the James W. Marshall Chapter 49 of the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus.

Lancha Plana (Flat Boat) was well settled by 1850 due to the hydraulic mining operations in the extensive gravel beds along the Mokelumne River. The Amador Dispatch newspaper was born here in 1856. Poverty Bar, Camp Opra, Copper Center, and Put's Bar were 'suburbs' of the larger town.

Bret Harte added to the community's fame in "An Episode of Fiddletown."<br /><br />Tablet placed by California Centennials Commission. Base furnished by residents of Fiddletown. Clinton<br /><br />Prospectors in 1849 traveled from the Mokelumne River through Clinton on the way to the diggins in Volcano. In the early 1850's, the camp of Clinton became a market town, supplying the placer miners of the middle and southern forks of Jackson Creek, and later the shallow quartz mines around Irishtown and Clinton. As a stop on the stage road between Jackson, Aqueduct City and Volcano, Clinton grew and by 1852 had 100 clapboard and canvas houses and the areas only hotel. The camp was predominantly occupied by Mexican, Chilean and French miners. The Spagnoli family, proprietors of the main mercantile store and ranch, helped secure Clintons future by also developing the ditches that supplied water to placer claims, around the Clinton area. Once Amador County was formed in 1854, Clinton entrepreneur Thomas Loehr petitioned the county to declare the road from Jackson to Clinton a public road. In 1877 Clinton was still alive enough for the Garbarini brothers to build St. Peter & Paul's Catholic Church which remained, when the town disappeared. In 2003, descendants of the Garbarini's, returned to restore the small church and it was moved to the Kennedy Mine Foundation's grounds in the Jackson gate area.<br /><br />This plaque dedicated on March 19th 2011 and year of our order 6016 by the James W. Marshall #49 Outpost of the Yerba Buena Lodge #1 Capitulus Redivivus of the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampsus Vitus

Clinton was the center of a placer mining community during the 1850s and of quartz mining as late as the 1880s. This town once decided Amador County elections as its votes were always counted last.

Butte Store<br /><br />Constructed by Italian stone mason in 1857. Served pioneer settlers and miners as post office and general store later known as Ginocchio's. <br /><br />Dedicated by Grand Parlor Native Sons of the Golden West. On Jackson Gate Road, about .1 miles S of China Graveyard Rd, Jackson<br /><br />The location description above is from the OHP, and it is very vague, in my opinion. When I visited, I thought the channel in the photos was the Jackson Gate. I've since learned it is a ways up this creek, about 500 feet south.<br /><br />The "gate" is a large gap between two rocks, directly behind the restaurant and buildings. There is a fence and dirt road heading to the old mining area.<br /><br />The photos with green grass are farther along the creek which goes through the gate, but not the gate itself.<br /><br /><a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/38%C2%B021'55.5%22N+120%C2%B046'33.3%22W/@38.3654292,-120.7765078,280m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d38.365428!4d-120.775905?hl=en">38.365428, -120.775905</a>

This rock used in Mother Lode champion hand drilling contests.<br /><br />Tablet placed and dedicated by the Native Sons and Native Daughters of the Golden West of Sutter Creek. May 10, 1942.

This town was named after John A. Sutter, who came to the region in 1846, and was the first to mine the locality in 1848. There was little activity at Sutter Creek until 1851, when quartz gold was discovered. In 1932 the Central Eureka mine, discovered in 1869, had reached the 2,300-foot level. By 1939, it was the best-paying mine at Sutter Creek.

Astronomical Observatory<br /><br />Here in Volcano in 1860, miner and amateur astronomer George Madeira built California's first astronomical observatory of record and operated it for two years. Using a three inch refractory telescope he studied sun and moon, stars and planets, and other glories of the heavens, including the great comet of 1861. <br /><br />Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Astronomical Societies of Stockton and Sacramento. Plaque first placed in 1968, revised and relocated in 2004.

On the knoll behind this marker George Madeira built the first amateur astronomical observatory of record in California. It was there that he discovered the Great Comet of 1861 with a three-inch refractor telescope.

Argonaut and Kennedy Mines<br /><br />Argonaut Mine, discovered 1850, and Kennedy Mine, discovered 1856, played dramatic roles in the economic development of California, producing $105,268,760 in gold. Kennedy Mine has a vertical shaft of 5,912 feet, the deepest in the United States and changed mining methods in the Mother Lode. The Argonaut was the scene of the Mother Lode's most tragic mine disaster. Forty eight miners were trapped in a fire at the 3,500-foot level on August 27, 1922 - few survived. Both mines closed in 1942.<br /><br />Plaque placed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Amador County Board of Supervisors, the Amador County Chamber of Commerce, and the Amador County Landmark Advisory Committee, February 2, 1968.

Site of Pioneer Jewish Synagogue <br /><br />On September 18, 1857, Congregation B'nai Israel of Jackson dedicated on this site the first synagogue in the Mother Lode. High Holiday worship continued until 1869 when the larger Masonic Hall was used to accommodate the congregation. The wooden structure then served as a schoolhouse until 1888. Relocated onto a nearby lot, it became a private dwelling, and was razed in 1948. <br /><br />Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the commission for the preservation of pioneer Jewish cemeteries and landmarks of the Judah L. Magnes Memorial Museum, June 27, 1976.

Preston Castle<br /><br />The "Castle," built in 1890-1894, is the most significant example of Romanesque Revival architecture in the Mother Lode. It was built to house the Preston School of Industry, established by the State Legislature as a progressive action toward rehabilitating, rather than simply imprisoning, juvenile offenders. Doors of the 120-room "Castle" closed in 1960 after new facilities were completed.<br /><br />Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Amador County Historical Society, July 14, 1974.

Chaw Se' Roundhouse<br /><br />In a village, the roundhouse served as the center of ceremonial and social life. Constructed in 1974, the Chaw se' roundhouse continues this tradition. With its door facing the east, towards the rising sun, four large oaks are the focal point of this sixty foot in diameter structure. Today, ceremonial roundhouses are the most significant architectural manifestation of the continuing Mistook spiritual heritage.<br /><br />Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Sierra Native American Council and the Chaw Se' Association, October 14, 1994.

Knight Foundry<br /><br />Knight Foundry was established in 1873 to supply heavy equipment and repair facilities to the gold mines and timber industry of the Mother Lode. Samuel N. Knight developed a high speed, cast iron water wheel which was a forerunner of the Pelton Wheel design. Knight Wheels were used in some of the first hydroelectric plants in California, Utah, and Oregon. This site is the last water powered foundry and machine shop in California. A 42-inch Knight Wheel drives the main line shaft, with smaller water motors powering other machines.<br /><br />Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with Carl W. Borch and Historic Knight & Co., Ltd. October 24, 1992.
